### Russian Potato Prices Surge by 35% Amid Low Base and Rising Input Costs
Retail prices for potatoes in Russia have increased by 35.3% over the past year, reaching 59.1 rubles per kilogram, according to the business daily "Kommersant". Wholesale prices have risen by nearly 39%.
Potatoes have become the most expensive vegetable in the so-called "borsch set" (a group of vegetables commonly used in Russian soups and stews), with white cabbage increasing by 32.1%, onions by 27.9%, beets by 23.3%, and carrots by 17.5%.
Experts attribute the price hike to the low base of the previous year, when Russia harvested almost a record-breaking 8.5 million tons of potatoes in the organized sector. Additionally, fuel market issues, higher costs of spare parts, and a labor shortage in the vegetable farming industry, which led to increased salary expenses to retain and attract workers, have contributed to the price increases.
