### Russia Sees First Decline in Restaurant Numbers Since 2022
In July, Russia had 223,800 food service establishments in operation, marking a 7.8% decrease compared to the same period last year, according to data from Infoline cited by [Kommersant](https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/8991711?max).
Analysts note that this is the first decline in the sector since 2022, and the current drop is more pronounced than during the COVID-19 restrictions period. In 2020, the number of food service establishments decreased by 4.8%, and in 2021, it was 2.6%.
Experts attribute the closure of food service outlets to increased tax burdens on businesses, growing competition from grocery retailers, and a general decline in consumer demand. According to data from "Evotor" (a Russian POS system provider), the number of receipts in cafes fell by 5% year-on-year in September, while in fast food outlets, it dropped by 7%. Meanwhile, according to "Platforma OFD" (a Russian tax reporting platform), the average bill in Russian food service establishments increased by 7% over the year, reaching 1,600 rubles.
