The Council of the European Union has decided to completely halt gas purchases from Russia by 2027, according to an official statement released by the European Council.
Under the new measures, a full ban on Russian LNG imports will take effect from January 1, 2027, while pipeline gas imports will be prohibited from September 30, 2027. In exceptional circumstances, the use of Russian gas may be extended until October 31, 2027, if storage levels fall below the required filling levels.
The relevant document was agreed upon during a ministerial meeting on January 26. Slovakia and Hungary opposed its adoption.
