By 2030, irrigated land area in Russia will increase from 1.2 million hectares to 1.7 million hectares, which is a 40% increase, according to forecasts announced today by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Ministry noted that Russia is second in the world in terms of freshwater reserves, which creates potential for the development of hydro-melioration.
In order to achieve 1.7 million hectares of irrigated land within five years, the country is implementing the state program "Land". This includes not only funding for special equipment but also compensation for costs associated with hydro-melioration works. By 2026, the "Land" program will increase its funding to 12.7 billion rubles.
In addition, a plan has been developed for the production and procurement of domestic irrigation equipment and water accounting systems.
Regarding the turnover of new lands, the Ministry plans to involve over 13 million hectares by 2030.
