Putin Backs Volodin for State Duma Speaker in New Convocation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has endorsed the proposal to nominate Vyacheslav Volodin for the position of Chairman of the State Duma in the ninth convocation, according to Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the ruling United Russia party and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia. The announcement was made during a joint meeting of party leadership bodies on September 24.

Medvedev stated that he had consulted with the President beforehand. Putin believes that Volodin is capable of continuing his work at the helm of the lower house of the Russian parliament. Medvedev himself also supports this proposal.

Volodin has been leading the State Duma since 2016. In the elections held from September 18-20, he was re-elected as a deputy from the Saratov single-mandate constituency, securing 83.87% of the votes, according to official results.

The Chairman of the State Duma is elected by the deputies of the lower house from among their own members after the formation of a new convocation.

Earlier, Federal Business Magazine had reported on the candidates for the positions of Deputy Chairmen of the State Duma in the new convocation, as well as the likely heads of Duma committees and commissions.
