Ruble strengthens marginally against major currencies on Friday

The Russian ruble is gaining 0.1% against major currencies on Friday.

The USD/RUB pair is trading at around 84.35 rubles (ask) per U.S. dollar.

On the interbank currency market, the ruble-yuan (CNY/RUB) rate is testing the level of 12.57 rubles (ask) per yuan.

Starting December 27, 2024, the Central Bank of Russia will set official exchange rates for foreign currencies against the ruble based on consolidated data from both exchange and over-the-counter segments of the currency market. This move, outlined in Bank of Russia Instruction No. 6956-U, aims to enhance the representativeness of official rates amid growing volumes of over-the-counter transactions.

As of June 8, 2026, the Central Bank of Russia has changed the calculation method for the official euro-ruble (EUR/RUB) exchange rate. Instead of using direct quotes for EUR/RUB transactions, the bank now calculates the rate through a cross-currency mechanism using data from the European Central Bank. The new formula is EUR/RUB = USD/RUB × EUR/USD (based on ECB data).
