### Russian 5G Networks Boost Internet Speeds by 15-30% Compared to LTE
The introduction of fifth-generation (5G) networks in Russia has increased internet speeds by an average of 15-30% compared to LTE networks, according to data from telecom operators and market experts, as reported by [Vedomosti](https://www.vedomosti.ru/technology/articles/2026/09/18/1229751-naskolko-5g-bistree-lte?from=copy_text).
Internet speed is influenced by the distance between the user and the base station or the load on the station. Currently, 5G base stations are operational in select areas of Moscow and other cities, with operators planning to expand coverage gradually. The 5G networks are currently operating in a transitional Non-Standalone mode, meaning they use frequencies previously used by LTE networks. In the future, 5G networks are expected to transition to the Standalone mode, without reliance on LTE infrastructure.
Preliminary speed tests indicate that even in its initial phase, 5G technology delivers data transfer speeds 4-5 times higher than LTE.
Commercial 5G networks were launched in Russia on September 11. Initially, access was granted to residents of 16 cities, with plans to expand coverage over the next three years. From 2027 to the end of 2031, a transition to Russian-made 5G base stations is scheduled.
