Putin says strong ruble suits ordinary Russians

Russian President Vladimir Putin assessed the impact of the strengthening national currency on various economic players, according to RIA Novosti. He noted that a strong ruble has an evident positive effect for ordinary citizens but simultaneously creates additional challenges for companies focused on foreign markets.

Putin made these remarks on August 13 during a working visit to Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. On Iturup Island, he met with the governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko.

During the meeting, the regional head informed the president about the decline in corporate revenues, partly due to changes in the exchange rate.

Putin emphasized that the consequences of a stronger ruble for the economy are ambiguous. For citizens, a more valuable national currency is beneficial as it increases the purchasing power of ruble-denominated incomes. However, for exporters, a strong ruble can reduce their ruble revenues from selling products abroad.

"For the average citizen, this is good; for export-oriented enterprises, it creates problems," Putin said.

Thus, the strengthening ruble simultaneously supports consumer capabilities of the population while increasing pressure on companies whose significant portion of revenue comes from exports.
