Russia and North Korea (DPRK) have successfully connected the flying structures of a new road bridge across the Tumen River, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral infrastructure project.
The project was agreed upon in 2024 by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Active construction began in spring 2025 following a decision by the heads of government of both countries.
This new bridge will become the first road crossing between the two countries. Previously, connectivity was only provided by the so-called Friendship Bridge, a railway route. The opening of the new bridge is expected to substantially increase trade volume, simplify logistics, and accelerate the development of border areas.
The total length of the transportation crossing will be approximately 5 km, including about 1 km of the bridge itself. It will have two lanes for traffic. The bridge is scheduled to be operational by summer of this year.
In parallel, construction is underway for a road checkpoint in the area of Khasan, capable of handling up to 300 vehicles and nearly 3,000 people per day, with the potential for further capacity expansion.
