NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte spoke about a "long-term confrontation" with Russia and urged NATO allies to prepare for it at an industrial defense forum in Romania.

According to Rutte, Russia is a destabilizing force in Europe and is already preparing for a prolonged conflict.

"They are preparing for a long-term confrontation. We cannot be naive. We too must be prepared," Rutte was quoted as saying by "Kommersant".

It is known that earlier Rutte also suggested that NATO would shoot down Russian military aircraft only in the event of a direct threat to security if Russia violated the airspace of member countries. Russia has already been accused of crossing their borders by Poland and Slovakia.
