The U.S. Department of Defense has sent requests to 30 American universities to conduct audits of their academic collaborations with educational and research institutions in Russia, China, and Iran. The specific list of universities that received these notifications remains undisclosed.
In a statement, the Pentagon said that the increased scrutiny is aimed at protecting American research and technology from potential leaks. The department is concerned about unauthorized transfer of developments, theft of intellectual property, and the use of scientific achievements in the interests of states considered by Washington as rivals.
Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Mikhail stated that the department adheres to a policy of "zero tolerance" for academic partnerships that may pose risks to national security.
American universities are now tasked with reviewing their relevant connections and addressing any violations found. The Pentagon has warned that failure to conduct the audit or comply with the requirements could result in the loss of federal funding for research projects.
