In Russia, pork prices have started to rise again after a prolonged period of decline, according to market participants cited by Kommersant.

Over the past week, the price of live-weight pigs has increased by 5%, reaching 127 rubles ($1.5) per kilogram. However, compared to last year, the current wholesale price of pigs is still 20% lower.

At the same time, the cost of pork cuts has also risen. Neck and loin (carbonade) have increased by 2%, reaching 490 rubles ($5.8) and 265 rubles ($3.1) per kilogram respectively. Half-carcass and belly have gone up by 3%, to 185 rubles ($2.2) and 190 rubles ($2.2), while ham has risen by 7%, to 248 rubles ($2.9). The shoulder has seen the biggest increase, rising by 8% to 228 rubles ($2.7) per kilogram. Year-on-year, however, pork cuts remain 10-24% cheaper.

The Ministry of Agriculture attributes the rise in wholesale pork prices to market factors. Market participants believe that the increase in pork prices is due to the higher cost of poultry meat, which has led processors to use more pork in their recipes.
