Russian security services have announced the disruption of a terrorist plot involving two Russian citizens targeting railway infrastructure in the Moscow region.
According to the Federal Security Service (FSB), the suspects were allegedly in contact with a representative of Ukrainian intelligence services and acted on instructions from their handler. Investigators believe that they retrieved a homemade explosive device from a pre-arranged cache, which they intended to use for sabotage on a railway section in the Moscow area.
The FSB stated that the intended target was a train carrying fuel and lubricants. The suspects are believed to have conducted reconnaissance of the railway tracks, studied the area, and selected a location for placing and detonating the explosive device.
Both suspects were detained during an operation, and communication devices and other materials were seized, which, according to the FSB, confirm their involvement in the preparation of illegal activities. The FSB also reported that the detainees have already begun providing confessions.
At present, the legal status of the suspects is being determined, and relevant criminal cases are being initiated.
