### Poor Citizens Should Be Exempt from Income Tax - Russian Lawmaker Yuri Afonin, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, and first deputy chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), has proposed exempting low-income citizens from income tax as a social support measure. This suggestion was made during the St. Pyotrsburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). Afonin noted that many countries already have a de facto zero tax rate on low-income earners. He emphasized that those who are barely making ends meet should be supported by the state. > **"Those who are barely making ends meet should be supported by the state. This measure will provide protection for low-income families,"** Afonin said. He also suggested that the entire progressive tax scale should be adjusted, so that the poorest pay 0% tax while the wealthiest pay more. Afonin believes this will help uphold the principle of social justice.
