On the orders of Russian President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin, a temporary ceasefire has been declared for Victory Day celebrations marking the end of World War II. The truce will be in effect on May 8 and 9, 2026, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Moscow expects a reciprocal move from Kiev, which would allow for peaceful commemorative events to take place.
However, Russian officials also highlighted statements made by Ukrainian leadership at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, which included threats directed at Moscow on May 9.
The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that the Russian Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to ensure security during the festivities.
