Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko have signed a decree aimed at enhancing cross-border suburban rail service between their respective border regions. The document was adopted following a meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State.
The agreement envisions the restoration of direct suburban train routes without the need for passengers to change trains at the border. Currently, travelers must disembark, undergo formalities, and board a train of the other country. The resumption of seamless cross-border service will improve travel quality for citizens.
Regular service is scheduled to commence in April 2026. Initially, three daily trains will operate on two routes: "Smolensk - Orsha" and "Smolensk - Vitebsk." These two routes are expected to attract an additional 110,000 passengers over a three-year period.
In the future, the rail network will expand to include additional routes such as "Velikie Luki - Polotsk," "Velikie Luki - Vitebsk," and "Bryansk - Gomel."
Modern electric trains will be used to service the routes, with plans to eventually introduce high-comfort trains, including the "Lastochka" (Swallow) and "Finist" trains.
Special attention has been given to the social aspect of the project. All existing travel benefits for Russian passengers will also apply to Belarusian citizens. Funding for these obligations is included in the Union State budget. Work is also underway to develop an affordable tariff policy.
