The Southern Command of the US Armed Forces officially confirmed the operation to capture the oil tanker Olina. The message was posted on the official account of the department in a social network and was accompanied by a video recording.
According to the statement, the operation involved US Marines and Navy personnel from the Joint Task Force Southern Spear ("Southern Spear"). Acting in support of the US Department of Homeland Security, they boarded the ship from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.
The operation took place in the Caribbean Sea near the island of Trinidad, which is part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. According to American media, the tanker Olina previously made voyages to Venezuela and sailed under the flag of East Timor.
The US side has not yet disclosed additional details about the further fate of the ship and its crew.
