The Russian government plans to introduce a year-round ban on cryptocurrency mining in southern Buryatia and the Zabaykalsky Krai from 2026, according to a draft document of the government commission on the development of the electric power industry, as reported by Kommersant.
Previously, restrictions were in place for these regions only during the winter peak load period (from November 15 to March 15). It is noted that there are no organizations legally engaged in cryptocurrency mining in these regions, but the government began working on the restrictive measure as early as spring 2025. The final decision on mining restrictions will be made by the government commission. The Ministry of Energy has not received any requests for a mining ban from other regions.
Market experts believe that tightening restrictions will reduce the investment attractiveness of these regions and infringe upon the interests of market participants operating in compliance with the law.
