U.S. will allow Russia to complete the construction of the Paksh-2 nuclear power plant in Hungary. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the lifting of sanctions on the relevant project following a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Canada.

"It is already under construction, and they (the Hungarians) need to finish it. Since the project was designed and is being built by a Russian company, we want them to be able to complete it," Rubio explained the reasons for the decision, emphasizing that it is necessary for Budapest to achieve energy independence.

  • This refers to the project implemented by Rosatom. The under-construction power plant was subject to sanctions (introduced by the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden) in November 2024, but in June 2025, their effect was suspended (by the administration of Donald Trump).
