**Starting from January 1, 2025, drivers using car license plates without the Russian flag will face a fine of 500 rubles. This is due to a new GOST standard, which stipulates that all license plates must feature the flag image in the bottom right corner.**
Driving without the tricolor will be equated to driving with non-standard license plates and will be penalized under Article 12.2, Part 1 of the Russian Administrative Offences Code, according to TASS.
The new rule does not apply to vehicles registered before 2025 that comply with the current standard.
"The obligation to replace state registration plates issued before the entry into force of these changes and corresponding to the previously valid standard version is not provided for by law," the Ministry of Internal Affairs stated.
