### Nearly 900 Private Foundations Registered in Russia by Mid-September
According to research by the Higher School of Economics (HSE) titled "Private Foundations in Russia," nearly 900 private foundations have been registered in Russia by mid-September. The report, cited by the Russian business daily "Kommersant," notes that these foundations manage assets transferred to them by their founders.
Since the beginning of the year, the number of such structures has increased by almost 330 units, compared to about 250 new foundations registered the previous year. The study reveals that 17% of these foundations are managed by professional asset management companies, while more than 80% are managed by individuals.
Private foundations first appeared in Russia in 2022, but it was only after the clarification of their tax regime and the introduction of confidentiality for founders in 2024 that the registration of private foundations began to accelerate. Additionally, it became possible to transfer these foundations to companies for trust management.
Market participants attribute the growth in the number of new private foundations to the return of large capital to Russia amidst sanctions pressure.
Although the minimum requirement for establishing a private foundation is a capital of 100 million rubles, the actual amounts of assets transferred for management far exceed this figure. According to the 2025 annual report (disclosed by 397 funds with total assets of 551 billion rubles), the average asset size is 1.4 billion rubles. Based on this, experts estimate the current market size to be over 1.2 trillion rubles.
Most private foundations have assets ranging from 100 to 500 million rubles, but the majority of capital is concentrated in a small number of the largest funds. The top five funds account for approximately 50% of all assets.
Experts highlight the significant growth potential of this segment, predicting that 350-450 new private foundations will emerge annually in the coming years.
