U.S. House passes bill allowing White House to impose sanctions on Russia

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have approved a bill that would grant the White House additional authority to impose sanctions on Russia, according to Reuters.

The initiative was supported by 262 members of the lower chamber of Congress, while 159 lawmakers voted against it. The approved bill will now be sent to U.S. President Donald Trump for his signature.

The bill in question was drafted by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. The new provision would allow the U.S. President to impose direct sanctions on Russian banks, companies, and individuals, as well as on the so-called "shadow fleet" (a network of vessels used to evade sanctions). Additionally, the President would have the power to impose secondary sanctions in the form of 100% tariffs on major buyers of Russian energy resources.
