Mackerel wholesale prices surge 64% year-on-year

Wholesale prices for mackerel in northwestern Russia reached 410 rubles ($6.6) per kilogram by August 31, up 64% year-on-year, according to data from National Fish Resources ("Natrybresurs"), as reported by Kommersant.

In central Russia, wholesale prices for mackerel increased by 52.7% to 420 rubles ($6.8) per kilogram. Nationwide, wholesale prices for mackerel have risen by 40-51.9% since the beginning of the year, marking the most significant increase among other fish species monitored. Prices in August alone increased by 5-5.1%.

Experts attribute the price surge to reduced fish catches and higher fishing costs amid ongoing international restrictions.

Following the rise in wholesale prices, retail prices for mackerel also increased, leading to a 28% drop in demand year-on-year. This is the most significant decline among chilled and frozen fish products.
