Death Toll Rises to 5 in Moscow Restaurant Explosion

The death toll from the restaurant explosion on Kudrinskaya Square in central Moscow has risen to five people, Russian news outlet Izvestia reported, citing its own source.

Two of the victims who were initially taken to medical facilities later died from their injuries.

Police have now lifted the cordon around the restaurant, and forensic investigations at the scene have been completed. The building suffered significant damage, including from shrapnel.

The explosion occurred on the evening of August 1. According to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee, a woman suspected of carrying out the attack attempted to enter the restaurant with a homemade explosive device. The blast killed her, a security guard who prevented her from entering, and one of the patrons. Following the incident, all people inside the restaurant were evacuated.

Preliminary reports indicate that a wedding celebration was taking place at the restaurant at the time of the explosion. Initial reports mentioned 19 injured individuals.
