The State Duma will consider the appointment of a new Human Rights Ombudsman in Russia during a plenary session on May 14, reports TASS.
State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin stated that the procedure for approving candidates was pre-agreed by the Duma Council. During the session, the candidates will present themselves to the deputies and then answer questions from representatives of all parliamentary factions.
Three candidates from opposition parties have been nominated for the federal ombudsman position. The Communist Party (KPRF) has proposed deputy Artem Prokofyev, who serves on the Tourism and Tourism Infrastructure Development Committee. The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) has nominated Ivan Sukharev, the first deputy chairman of the Property Committee. The "Just Russia - For Truth" party has put forward Yana Lantratova, chair of the Civil Society Development Committee.
The current Ombudsman, Tatyana Moskalkova, completed her term in April 2026 after serving in the position since 2016.
