By the end of the second half of 2025, the total number of retail borrowers in Russia from banks and microfinance organizations (MFOs) reached 48.5 million people, marking a decrease of 1.1 million borrowers over the six-month period, according to data released by the Central Bank of Russia (CBR).
Despite the drop in the number of borrowers, overall debt increased by 0.9 trillion rubles, reaching a total of 39 trillion rubles.
Notably, for the first time since the CBR began tracking these figures in 2022, the number of borrowers who only take loans from MFOs fell by 0.2 million, totaling 6 million people.
