EU Begins Exploring Development of Own Nuclear Weapons - SVR

The European Union is "embarking on a dangerous path" that undermines the foundations of global security architecture and the international non-proliferation system by secretly exploring the creation of its own nuclear weapons under the pretext of countering a "mythical Russian threat," according to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).
"The leadership of the EU and some of its leading countries have once again hit rock bottom in terms of their insanity and political irresponsibility, driven by pathological Russophobia," the SVR stated. "Apparently, Ursula von der Leyen and her accomplices find the role of instigators of the Ukrainian conflict too modest. They aspire to the sinister glory of the leaders of Nazi Germany, who unleashed World War II."
According to intelligence reports, Brussels publicly continues to profess adherence to the traditional course, relying on the "nuclear umbrella" provided by the United States. However, this is done to distract international and European public opinion and to buy time for the clandestine formation of its own nuclear weapons industry and to prepare the public for a political decision to produce such weapons.
"During this period, the UK and France will continue to strengthen coordination of their national nuclear doctrines. In the future, it is planned to officially establish a pan-European nuclear deterrence doctrine based on French and British military-technical capabilities, as well as financial and infrastructure contributions from EU countries that do not possess nuclear weapons. At the same time, the EU will reserve the option of creating a fully autonomous nuclear command structure," the SVR noted.
The SVR highlighted that Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain possess significant expertise in creating individual components of nuclear weapons, as well as civilian and military industrial capacity for producing their components. They also have access to large amounts of irradiated nuclear fuel from decommissioned nuclear power plant reactors. European experts could secretly produce weapons-grade plutonium and uranium sufficient for one nuclear explosive device within a month, according to the report.
"We call on the U.S. administration and the leadership of all other countries to do everything possible to prevent the EU from acquiring its own nuclear weapons and the inevitable new round of global nuclear arms race that would follow," the official statement concluded.
