In Russia, wholesale prices for Pacific and Atlantic herring have sharply dropped. Over the week, the decline amounted to 4.2–12.1% respectively. This is reported by "Kommersant" citing data from "Natsrybresurs".
Year-on-year, the cost of the most popular fish in Russia in wholesale terms has decreased even more significantly—by 11.5–32.7%.
Experts explain the dynamics by an increase in fishing, the formation of warehouse surpluses, as well as seasonal decline in demand. As of November 10, Russian fishermen had caught 547.3 thousand tons of herring. Year-on-year growth amounted to 31.9%. However, market participants do not expect the trend to be long-term, anticipating a rise in wholesale prices as early as the beginning of 2026 due to the resumption of high export demand.
At the same time, according to data from Nielsen analysts, herring sales in retail in natural terms increased by 4.3% over the year, and in value terms—by 23.4%. Sales of fish canned goods, meanwhile, decreased by 11.5% in natural terms. According to Rosstat data, the average cost of salted herring fillet increased by 15.5% year-on-year, reaching 673.3 rubles per 1 kg.
