Starting from September 1, some citizens in the regions of Russia may lose ownership of their land plots. Abandoned, cluttered and overgrown with weeds will be seized, RIA Novosti informs, citing a comment by Sergey Kolunov, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Construction and Housing and Communal Services.

The new rules apply to sites where an erected and registered facility has been missing for a long time. For construction land, the term is 5 years. On plots for individual housing construction for 7 years.

Areas where half of the territory is littered with waste or garbage are also subject to seizure. To preserve the land for themselves, the owner must restore order to the site within a year. Also, the land will be seized for weeds over a meter high, occupying more than half of the territory.

Sites can also be taken away for the dilapidated condition of buildings where walls are collapsing, windows are missing, or other damage is present.

Sergey Kolunov noted that the seizure of unused land is an extreme measure.
