The authorities of France and Belgium did not support the EU plan to ban gas imports from Russia by 2027, the European edition of Politico reports. Hungary and Slovakia may also block the ban.However, its implementation requires the consent of all EU countries.
Many European politicians and industry advocate a return to supplies from the Russian Federation due to high energy bills and economic problems, the newspaper reports.
The European Commission had previously proposed banning new Russian gas import transactions by 2025 and completely ending them by 2027. The final proposals will be submitted in June. The European Union launched the REPowerEU program in 2022 to phase out Russian gas by 2027, but LNG purchases from Russia increased from 15% in 2023 to almost 19% in 2024.
