At a meeting in the State Duma in the second and third readings, a bill was passed allowing for the conduct of trials in absentia against persons abroad who have committed crimes against the security of the Russian Federation.

The bill, initiated by Deputy Speaker of the House of Parliament Irina Yarova, is aimed at ensuring the sovereignty and security of the Russian Federation from attempts of foreign interference.

With the adoption of the law, trials in criminal cases of serious and especially serious crimes will be able to be conducted in the absence of the defendant, who is located outside the Russian Federation and avoids appearing in court.

Sentencing in absentia will be possible for a number of crimes, including the destruction or damage of military graves and monuments, the rehabilitation of Nazism, calls for mass riots, the outbreak of aggressive war, extremism, terrorism, violation of the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, the spread of fakes and discrediting of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
