The State Duma has adopted a bill on regulating the safety of thermonuclear reactors and installations. The document amends the law on the Use of Atomic Energy.

The bill is aimed at developing thermonuclear and plasma technologies within the framework of the federal Thermonuclear Energy Technologies project. It extends the legal framework for regulating atomic energy to all thermonuclear installations.

Thermonuclear installations can generate intense ionizing radiation even without nuclear materials. The new draft law introduces additional requirements to technological processes to prevent radiation exposure to the population and the environment.

The regulations divide installations into two categories:

nuclear installations include thermonuclear reactors with nuclear materials or generating intense radiation;
the remaining thermonuclear installations are regulated as radiation sources.

This will create a comprehensive security system for all types of thermonuclear installations in Russia.
