Over the past two years, the number of Russian passports and residence permits issued to foreigners in Russia has sharply decreased. This is reported with reference to the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. "Kommersant".

Thus, in 2024, the number of people granted Russian citizenship dropped to a record low over the past five years. In just one year, 209,000 new Russians appeared. For comparison, 378,000 foreign citizens received Russian passports in 2023, 691,000 in 2022, 735,000 in 2021, and 656,000 in 2020.

At the same time, the number of foreigners expelled from the Russian Federation has grown at a record pace. 190.2 thousand foreign citizens were expelled or deported from the country (+31.1% YoY), of which 157 thousand were due to violations of Russian legislation (+44.6%).

Law enforcement authorities explain this trend with tightened control in the migration sphere. Experts suggest that the CBO and the terrorist attack in Crocus were also of great importance.
