Authorities in Krasnodar Region have declared a state of heightened readiness due to the potential spill of oil products in the Black Sea following an attack by unmanned boats on the Aframax Rio oil tanker off the coast of Sochi. The decision was made by regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev.
"As a result of attacks by unmanned boats on October 6, 2026, an accident occurred in the Black Sea waters, posing a threat of a regional-scale emergency situation for the city districts of Gelendzhik and Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Region due to the possible oil spill," the document states.
Kondratyev ordered the formation of emergency response teams and their preparation for deployment to potential areas of operation if necessary.
- Earlier on October 6, unmanned boats of the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the Aframax Rio oil tanker sailing under the Liberian flag off the coast of Sochi. All 23 crew members (Indian citizens) were rescued with no casualties. The attack resulted in an oil fire, which was subsequently extinguished.
