### Natural Gas Pricing Dynamics: Russia, Europe, and the U.S. Natural gas prices, including those of Russian origin, are shaped by current global gas and oil prices. There are two primary international benchmarks for natural gas pricing: 1. **Henry Hub (U.S.)**: - Current price: Adjusted to $3 per million BTU (British Thermal Units) on Wednesday. 2. **TTF (Europe)**: - Current price: Increased to $590 per 1,000 cubic meters on Wednesday. ### Understanding the Benchmarks 1. **Henry Hub (U.S.)**: Henry Hub is a gas distribution hub in Louisiana, serving as the benchmark for U.S. natural gas prices traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). The price is measured in BTUs. To convert the price to an equivalent of 1,000 cubic meters, multiply by 35.8. Note that this price reflects only the raw cost of gas, excluding liquefaction, transportation, and regasification costs. Thus, U.S. consumers pay significantly more for the final product. 2. **TTF (Europe)**: TTF stands for Title Transfer Facility, a virtual trading platform for gas in Europe. It is the main benchmark for European gas prices. ### Global Pricing Mechanisms Gas pricing globally is diverse, incorporating various mechanisms: - **Exchange Trading**: Competitive pricing, as seen on TTF in Europe. - **Oil Indexation**: Linking gas prices to oil prices. - **Regulated Prices**: Government-set prices. - **Direct Contracts**: Prices determined by supply and demand, influenced by global benchmarks and the cost of alternative fuels (gas, oil, coal). Russian gas prices, particularly for export markets, have historically been heavily tied to oil prices but are now more influenced by spot markets and competitive mechanisms, although the link to energy prices remains.
