Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a working meeting with permanent members of the Security Council on January 21 via video link, commented on recent statements from the American side regarding the status of Greenland. The Russian leader expressed the view that this issue is a bilateral matter between the United States and Denmark, and they should resolve it on their own. "They will sort it out themselves," Putin stated.

The reaction was prompted by remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump shortly after a military operation related to Venezuela in January. Trump stated that it was strategically necessary for the U.S. to acquire the Danish autonomous territory, arguing that the island, according to him, was in an area of active presence of Chinese and Russian ships. He also suggested that if the deal was refused, the territory could eventually fall under the influence of Beijing or Moscow. In response to a question, Putin refrained from further assessments, emphasizing that the parties themselves should find a solution.

Greenland is currently part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Denmark actively defends the independence of the island in the North Atlantic. Trump, on the other hand, is convinced that Greenland should be part of the United States.
