Starting from January 1, 2026, Russia will launch a three-year experiment allowing self-employed individuals to access the social insurance system for the first time. The corresponding laws have been signed by President Vladimir Putin. The main goal of this initiative is to enable self-employed individuals to obtain paid sick leave, a social guarantee that they have previously been deprived of. According to trade unions, this experiment will be an important step towards the final determination of the legal status of self-employed individuals. Participation in the program will be entirely voluntary. The right to receive payments for temporary disability will arise after six months of paying insurance contributions. Insurance cases will include illness, injury, quarantine, care for a sick family member, or rehabilitation in a sanatorium. Participants will have two options for monthly contributions to the Social Fund: - 1,344 rubles - the insurance amount will be up to 35,000 rubles for a full month of disability. - 1,920 rubles - the maximum payment will increase to 50,000 rubles per month. The insurance amount will be indexed in proportion to the growth of the minimum wage. Contributions can be paid in advance for several months (up to a maximum of one year). Joining the system will be possible through the familiar mobile application "My Tax." Enrollment in the program will be open until September 30, 2027. The experiment will run from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028, and will take place throughout the country.
