In Russia, there are approximately 300 Mi-8 helicopters produced before 1991 in operation. The service life of this equipment is periodically extended, but it cannot be done indefinitely due to flight safety considerations and federal aviation regulations, according to the publication "Izvestia" citing Rostec.
In 2025, 20 old helicopters were denied an extension of their service life, and in 2026, another 40 helicopters may not have their service life extended.
According to experts, all obsolete equipment in use may be decommissioned within the next five years, which could be a blow to the economy of carriers who have invested in repairing the aircraft.
