Airlines are proposing to consider the possibility of easing restrictions on flights in the south of the Russian Federation in order to increase passenger traffic. This is reported by "Kommersant".

We are talking about straightening the southern corridor, for example, at a distance from Elista to Volgograd. According to estimates by air carriers, the effect of this will bring them an additional 5 million passengers per year. And the opening of at least one more of the southern airports will increase the annual passenger traffic by 7 million people.

It is also proposed to transfer replacement airfields that close at night, whose work is necessary during the introduction of restrictions due to the threat of UAV attacks, to round-the-clock operation. If the current restrictions remain in place, the annual passenger traffic may be lower than the 105 million people projected by the Ministry of Transport, the carriers note.

Market participants believe that the Ministry of Transport should initiate discussions with the Ministry of Defense on the adjustment of southern routes, as the example of the opening of Krasnodar Airport this summer proves the possibility of finding such solutions.

  • Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Transport, Andrey Nikitin, stated that the agency was working on the issue of reopening airports that had been closed since February 2022.
