Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, told reporters that WhatsApp, although it is the most popular service in many countries, including Russia, is obliged to comply with the laws of the country.

Earlier, Anton Gorelkin, first deputy chairman of the Duma IT committee, said that it was time for the messenger to prepare for withdrawal from the Russian market.

"A messenger belonging to the extremist organization Meta is very likely to be included in the list of software from unfriendly countries subject to restrictions, which the Russian government is developing on behalf of the president," Gorelkin said.

According to statistics, 68% of Russians currently use WhatsApp on a daily basis, with Telegram in second place in terms of daily coverage with 55%.
