US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 30% tariffs on imports from the European Union and Mexico starting August 1. The relevant notifications have been sent to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. Trump posted copies of the letters on his Truth Social account.

In his address to von der Leyen, the American leader stressed that the new duties would operate separately from sectoral tariffs. The Mexican side also received a similar letter: Trump accused Mexico of insufficient efforts to combat drug cartels, fentanyl smuggling and illegal migration.

The White House is ready to cancel tariffs if the EU and Mexico start manufacturing their products in the United States.Trump also warned that in the event of retaliatory measures from Brussels or Mexico City, Washington will add to the 30% amount by which their tariffs on American goods will be increased.

"This decision is part of a broader tariff policy of the Trump administration. In April, the United States imposed 10 percent tariffs on goods from 185 countries, temporarily freezing some of them for the duration of negotiations. On June 27, Trump announced that in the coming days, countries that have not concluded trade agreements with the United States will receive notifications about new import conditions.

The EU and Mexico were among the first to face a drastic tightening of trade rules with the United States. Experts do not rule out the introduction of retaliatory measures against goods from the United States.
