Several dozen tankers that were sanctioned by the United States could not unload and embarked on a raid in the waters of importing countries. This is reported by "Kommersant".

We are talking about at least 65 oil tankers located in different parts of the world, including the coasts of Russia, China, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The ports of the importing countries are afraid of secondary sanctions, as they have Western counterparties, shareholders from the USA and the EU.

Experts believe that the owners of the blacklisted tankers will have to reissue insurance to "clean" companies and "whitewash" the cargo. In the future, they may be able to challenge the imposition of sanctions, but at the moment they do not have effective mechanisms to resolve the situation.

Due to the problems that have arisen, the largest consumers of Russian oil may increase their purchases from the Middle East, Africa and the United States, which will lead to higher prices. Another part of importers may try to keep purchases from the Russian Federation with the condition of providing an additional discount.

Sanctions against the "shadow Russian fleet" USA introduced on January 10, 2025. They affected 183 tankers and 10 traders specializing in the transportation of energy resources from the Russian Federation.

According to Kpler, 143 tankers from the US blacklist transported over 530 million barrels of Russian oil in 2024, accounting for 42% of total offshore oil exports from the Russian Federation. In particular, China bought 300 million barrels, most of the remainder came from India.
