Russia plans to develop a digital model of the Caspian Sea that will enable predictions of water level changes and assess the potential consequences of these processes. The initiative, announced by President Vladimir Putin at the Caspian Environmental Summit in Turkmenistan, will utilize artificial intelligence technologies.
Putin stated that the Russian government is preparing a comprehensive research program for the Caspian Sea, scheduled until 2030. The program will focus on studying water level dynamics and developing measures to mitigate negative impacts of its fluctuations.
The initiative includes a broad range of scientific studies, with Russia intending to share the results with interested parties, according to Putin.
A key component of the initiative is the creation of a digital twin of the Caspian Sea. The plan is to develop a highly accurate virtual model of the body of water, incorporating data on evaporation, precipitation, and river runoff. Using this information, artificial intelligence algorithms will calculate potential scenarios for changes in sea levels.
According to the Russian proposal, the technology will not only enhance the prediction of natural processes but also address practical challenges. For example, the digital model could be used to refine and adjust shipping routes, as well as improve navigation safety.
Putin invited the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to join the project. He believes that international cooperation in this area will help combine efforts to study the Caspian Sea and assess risks associated with changes in its water levels.
