Russian MP Calls for Investigation into Surging Ice Cream Prices

Sergei Mironov, leader of the Fair Russia party, has urged the Russian government to investigate the sharp increase in ice cream prices, TASS reports.

Mironov noted that the cost of ice cream has risen significantly again in May, similar to last year. He pointed out that a typical purchase for a family of three now costs between 400-500 rubles ($5-6), which he described as a noticeable burden for many Russians.

According to Mironov, there are no objective reasons for such a significant price hike. He accused manufacturers and retailers of taking advantage of seasonal demand to boost profits during peak consumption periods.

The MP called on the Ministry of Industry and Trade and industry associations to work with market participants to prevent unjustified price increases.

Mironov questioned the traditional explanations given by producers. He argued that the strengthening ruble reduces import costs, and the increase in prices for dairy products, sugar, and other ingredients was not significant enough to justify the spike in ice cream prices.

He also expressed doubts about the arguments regarding packaging and logistics costs. Mironov stated that these factors have a limited impact on the final price and cannot explain the noticeable increase in store prices.
