Two U.S. Navy destroyers equipped with laser weapons have been deployed in the Arabian Sea, southeast of Iran, according to a report by The War Zone citing a U.S. Navy official.
The destroyers, USS John Finn and USS Spruance, are armed with ODIN (Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy) laser systems designed to blind and disorient attack drones. They can also disable cameras and sensors on reconnaissance systems and weapon-guidance systems of ships, submarines, and aircraft.
Directed-energy systems have been installed on just nine U.S. Navy destroyers for combat testing.
The U.S. Navy presence in the Arabian Sea includes a total of 20 warships, comprising aircraft carriers, large amphibious ships carrying Marines, missile destroyers, littoral combat ships, and mine countermeasure vessels. These ships are maintaining a 24-hour blockade of Iranian ports.
