Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law allowing stateless persons to serve in the army under contract. The document has been published on the official legal portal and amends the law on Military Duty and Military Service.
Now stateless persons can sign contracts with the Armed Forces and other military formations. The law also extends the provisions on military pensions to them and their family members.
In addition, the process of obtaining citizenship has been simplified for those who serve in the army for at least a year. They will not need to live in Russia for five years after obtaining a residence permit. The Federation Council believes that the new law will help improve military recruitment.
