In April 2025, the Russian POS lending market showed a record decline. Banks have issued only 187,000 POS loans, which is the lowest figure in the last six years. The volume of loans issued amounted to 11.76 billion rubles, which is the lowest figure since March 2022. During the year, the market decreased by 62% in quantitative terms and by 66% in monetary terms.

The situation was aggravated by the deterioration of the main lending indicators. The average check decreased by 10% and amounted to 62,836 rubles, and the average loan term decreased from 23 to 13 months. In the first four months of 2025, 806,000 loans totaling 50.14 billion rubles were issued, which is half the figure for the same period last year.

Experts identify several key reasons for such a sharp decline, according to "Vedomosti".The main factor is the high key rate of the Central Bank (21%), which makes lending economically unprofitable. Macroprudential limits that limit the volume of disbursements have a significant impact. The critical situation demonstrates the level of risks: the share of rejected applications has reached 84%. Additional factors include a decrease in consumer demand due to inflation and attractive deposit rates (more than 22% per annum), as well as increased competition from BNPL services, which turn out to be more attractive to consumers.
