The sale of expired medicines will be automatically blocked at the checkout

The Government of the Russian Federation has approved a set of measures to protect customers from substandard medicines. According to a decree recently signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, starting from June 1, 2025, it will be impossible to purchase expired or counterfeit medicines in Russia.

To implement this innovation, the existing control system for the movement of medicines will be improved. In particular, it is necessary to establish uninterrupted operation between this system and the cash register equipment of all pharmaceutical companies by the specified date.

After the mechanism is launched, each pharmacy will have the opportunity to check the status of drugs sold in real time. The system will automatically block the sale of medicines that:

• have expired
• have been suspended from circulation
• excluded from circulation

In addition, pharmacists will be able to pre-check special identification codes and unique numbers of drugs before starting their sale. This will make it much more difficult for counterfeit medicines to enter the pharmacy network and protect consumers from purchasing them.
