In January 2025, the number of credit cards issued decreased by 20% compared to the previous month, reaching 1.15 million. This is the lowest value since April 2022. The volume of approved credit limits also decreased by 41%, to 135 billion rubles.
The main reason for this drop was the tightening of regulations by the Central Bank, including restrictions on issuing new cards and increasing limits for people with heavy debts. Banks have started to select clients more carefully, paying attention only to those who can pay their bills, which has led to a decrease in the number of approved applications.
Experts do not expect an improvement in the credit card market in the near future. However, when the Central Bank starts lowering the key rate and making loans more affordable, a gradual recovery of this segment is possible, although this will not happen immediately.
