Russia, as its own seed production increases, will progressively reduce import purchases of these products. Such plans were announced by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.
According to the department, the market share of domestic seed breeding has increased this year. Significant progress has been recorded in such crops, for which previously there was a high dependence on imports from unfriendly countries: corn, sugar beet, potatoes, sunflower, soybeans and rapeseed.
The Ministry noted that plans to reduce the volume of imports of seeds of major crops go hand in hand with plans to create the necessary conditions for the accelerated development of domestic breeding and seed production, support for Russian science and business, and access to self-sufficiency in seeds.According to the accepted doctrine of food security, the indicator of self-sufficiency in domestic seeds of major crops is set at at least 75%. In order to support producers and consumers of seeds of domestic breeding in Russia, various measures are provided, for example, preferential loans and subsidies to reimburse part of the costs of creating or modernizing seed breeding centers (25-50% of the actual cost of the facility), as well as compensation for the cost of purchasing seeds (up to 70%).
